vicki murphy - joey carman is a talented, photographer who has been generously donated his time, skills and photographic supplies to work with the children of Casa Pacifica, helping them to look at their world in a new way – through the lens of a camera. the children are representing their world through some creative, amazing, beautiful, and poignant photographs!

Casa Pacifica is a crisis-care and residential treatment facility for abused, neglected, or at-risk children located in Camarillo, CA, and the photography program run by Mr. Carman has had a tremendous impact on the children involved in it. They are gaining a sense of accomplishment, self-worth, and pride as their photographs are printed and displayed in a professional manner. The whole experience is quite therapeutic for these children who suffer from severe emotional and behavioral disorders as a result of their abuse and neglect.

Mr. Carman has been extremely generous and effective in creating a curriculum that is therapeutic, fun and inspiring for all the children of Casa Pacifica helping them to heal.

casa pacifica staff - Alex (name withheld) is resident at Casa Pacifica, and he as many struggles with self image and self expression. He was often depressed and found it hard to communicate with staff. He started attending the photography class at Casa Pacifica the first night it started. Since then there has been tremendous growth in Alex. Through the photography class Alex has made several positive connections with staff, and as a result making it easier for him to talk about things that he had previously found hard to talk about, with those staff. He is often very excited and enthusiastic about photography class and is persistent in asking staff to take him out to take pictures. He has taken to photography like a fish to water, even taking time to work on photography when he goes home on the weekends. It has helped him grow more confident and expressive, and he has not struggled as much with depression. He has stated that he could “see himself as a professional photographer someday”.

casa pacifica staff - Michelle and John (names withheld) are residents in the shelter program here at Casa Pacifica, and they have recently started to attend photography class. Casa Pacifica staff has noticed that they are more outgoing and feel connected to the staff they have encountered at photography class. Although they have been to other activities with the same staff they have never approached the staff or talked to them. Since being in photography class Michelle and John have sought out the staff from photography class for assistance in many areas, including personal struggles, photography class, and just to chat.

casa pacifica staff - Staff has noticed significant behavioral changes in residents that see photography class as an opportunity to learn, have fun, and interact appropriately with their peers. There have been residents who have been struggling, and on the verge of going out of program, who when they were reminded by staff, that if they continued to struggle they would not be able to attend photography class that week, and that would help the residents gain perspective and turn their behaviors back to the positive and appropriate.
